THE LAST BATTLE: THE PRESS AND MILITARY IN VIETNAM

The unprecedented freedom that reporters enjoyed in Vietnam was blamed by many military with turning the American public against the War.

Military commanders vowed to never let it happen again.  Britain's' Maggie Thatcher, saw what had happened and made sure the press was contained when she ordered the invasion of the Falklands.  Her success in controlling the media gave the American military the ammunition they needed.

In the Gulf War, the press were herded into bunkers and shown a sanitized version events that many likened to a video game.  The military had been planning their information war for years.  And it worked.

But today, many are questioning what the proper role of the press is in wartime and who should decide what is reported.

We proposed to take a look at how the military and the presses relationship developed in Vietnam and see where it might be going in the future.
